McCain, originally from York, Pennsylvania, has had a dynamic and successful career across stage, television, and film. After earning a degree in philosophy from Ripon College and studying at the Central School of Speech and Drama in London, she made her Broadway debut in Play It Again, Sam and later appeared in notable off-Broadway productions. She quickly transitioned to television with a leading role in Apple's Way and appearances in iconic series like The Rockford Files and Washington: Behind Closed Doors.
 

In the 1980s, McCain starred in some of the era’s most beloved films, including Gremlins, Footloose, and Stand by Me, where she portrayed memorable maternal characters. With her extensive body of work, McCain remains a respected and versatile figure in the entertainment industry.
